Essay Question Paper of UPSC Civil Services Mains 2013 had four choices from which one essay should be written in the time limit. Total available pages for writing the essay was around 25. Total pages in the booklet was 32 + pages for rough work.
Write an essay on any one of the following topics, in NOT MORE than 2500 words. (250 marks)
- Be the change you want to see in others – Gandhiji.
- Is the Colonial mentality hindering India’s Success?
- GDP (Gross Domestic Product) along with GDH (Gross Domestic Happiness) would be the right indices for judging the well-being of a country.
- Science and technology is the panacea for the growth and security of the nation.
Remark: It seems most the the students, particularly from science and engineering stream selected the 4th essay on Science and Technology. The next priority seems the Colonial mentality and GDH essays.

Finally the IAS Main Exam 2013 started on 2 December 2013 with the Essay Paper. The Essay paper has a new dimension this time that is word limit of 2500 words was introduced in the Essay paper.
